8 Things to do these School Holidays
If you are looking for something to do these school holidays in the South Burnett, check out our list of things to do.
1. Ice Cream @ Yarraman
I have been known to have a bit of sweet tooth and am guilty of the odd sweet treat. One of my all-time family favourites is ice cream – particularly on a hot spring day. I am so excited to learn that a great little ice-creamery has recently opened up in Toomey Street, Yarraman. Therefore, if you’re heading to the South Burnett and want a place to stretch your legs, and a little treat for the kids, stop at the Pink Flamingo and spoil yourself with an ice cream or gelato.
2. Take a dip in the local pool
The number one thing to do on my list these school holidays is to head to the local pool. I love taking the kids to the pool; they will play in the water for hours and I won’t hear a peep out of them. With the weather, already starting to heat up in the South Burnett the pool is the perfect place to cool off. We have six pools located in the South Burnett, so there is bound to be a pool close by. Opening this weekend on Saturday the 21st September is Murgon, Wondai, and Proston. Kingaroy and Blackbutt will follow suit opening on Wednesday 25th and Saturday 28th. Nanango pool is open all year round.
3. Kids activities at South Burnett PCYC
“I’m bored” is a phrase I am sure you can all relate too, and will probably hear more than once these school holidays. If you are like me and don’t want the kids to sit idle in front of the Xbox all day, and are looking for some ideas to keep them busy, the South Burnett PCYC have a great line up of fun programs for all ages. They have everything from gymnastics to slime making. Check out their facebook page for more information.
4. A night out at the movies
One of the biggest highlights as a child was driving one hour to the local Drive-in theatre to watch a movie, only to fight with my sisters in the back seat because we couldn’t see the screen. Drive-in movie theatres might be a thing of the past but you can still experience a movie under the stars at Proston’s Moonlight Cinema. Located at the Railway Park in Proston on Saturday 28th September at 6.30pm. Bring a blanket and settle in to watch ‘Storm Boy”. The Proston Mens Shed will be having a BBQ with sausage on bread and popcorn.
5. Go karts @ Nanango
After a movie under the stars what about a day out at the go-karts. I don’t know if this is just my family but when we all get together at the go-karts it is on like donkey-Kong. Nothing like a little family rivalry to see who can get the fastest lap, unfortunately I can’t say that I have ever taken line honors. The South Burnett Kart Hire is Located at Nanango and opened every day over the school holidays. There are even double carts with dual controls available for the little rev-heads in your family. For bookings, these school holidays call 4171 0040
6. Sound trail @ Nanango
As with most kids these days, they enjoy anything that involves using technology. A group of volunteers at Nanango have come up with an ingenious way of giving you a personalised guided tour of the town using nothing but your mobile. All you need to do is get the kids to download the Soundtrail app to their phone or ipad and plug in your earphones. Now simply take a walk around the streets of Nanango, and listen to the stories from a local legend – Reg McCallum. 92-year-old Reg will take you on a forty-minute journey around town and tell you the hidden stories of the town and the people.
7. Free holiday art program
I had always thought of spray-painting as tagging your name on someone else’s property and then running as fast as you can so you didn’t’ get caught- boy was I wrong. Spray Art, as it is more commonly know is regarded as one of the most creative and expressive forms of arts. An art form is becoming very popular in and around Murgon, with Local artist Kane Brunjes spray-painting the town. Kane will be displaying his skills by holding a free holiday workshop for kids to demonstrate the art of spray painting. The plan is to repaint the amenities block in lamb street, Murgon. Kane will teach you how to turn your tagging into a work of arts The workshop is free and open to youth of all ages, held in Lamb Street, Murgon next to the Visitor Information Centre. Starting from 10am to 3pm on Monday 30th September to Wednesday 2nd October.
8. Country Fair @ Murgon Dairy Museum
One of our favourite things to do as a family when traveling is to check out the local events that are happening in the area, so I do not miss any local festivities. The Country Fair at the QLD Dairy and Heritage Museum in Murgon is shaping up to be a must see event these school holidays. Market and food stalls, Devonshire tea, butter making demonstrations, Horse and cart rides and my favourite the scarecrow competition. The Country Fair will be held on Saturday the 29th September from 9am to 3pm.
